You woke up this morning, grabbed your phone, and scrolled through your Facebook’s news feed; you noticed news from the late April snowstorm in Canada to the unprecedented hot weather in Cambodia. The climate change is a hot topic during this century. You can’t go through a day without hearing this topic on the news or from people around you. I believe you do care but perhaps you have no idea how to help or may think it is too costly for you. So here are 5 easy ways you can effortlessly do to reduce your environmental impact while saving extra pennies.

Bring a reusable water bottle with you

Having a reusable (or use stainless steel/glass) water bottle everywhere with you is more convenient than you thought. If you’re traveling, you always have supply of water with you and it can be life-saving when there is no water nearby. If you’re at work, you normally have Water Filter machine at the office. You just have to refill it. Plus, you don’t have to leave your office to buy every time you’re thirsty. Using reusable water bottle is also eco-friendly, replacing the use of plastic bottle. The data from Earth Day Network shows that about one trillion single-use plastic bags are used annually across the globe which is almost 2 million every minute.  On top of that, plastic bottles commonly take 400 years to naturally decompose and the majority of plastic bottles used across the planet are for drinking water. You can contribute to protecting the environment just by using reusable water bottle rather than the plastic one. Another benefit is it saves your money on water. Don’t underestimate amount you spend on water every day; it can be a chunk of money as time goes by.

Cut Down your Unnecessary Expense

Trying to minimize your spending is counted as your effort in going “Green”. It reduces the environmental impact of material consumption and your footprint on the environment. Some of you might think it’s not easy to do so maybe because you’re used to living in your lavish lifestyle. It’s true that the beginning is always the hardest but as you start your first step and develop the habit, cutting down your unnecessary spending will become easier. Plus, thinking about the amount of money you will be saving and the return on investment you will get if you save or invest your money rather than spending it on stuff you don’t need, you will thank yourself later for doing it. And, while you can live green and save some cashes by buying less stuff, you can also save the cost of maintenance the stuff you bought too.

Go Paperless

I believe most of you, who are reading this, own some kind of digital devices, be it a smartphone, tablet, iPad or a laptop. Everyone knows that technology progress create convenience for the users. Plus, it can also be cost-saving and good for the environment. Using technological tools help you go paperless, meaning less paper produced and wasted, reducing the deforestation, chemical substance steaming from the industry which leads to water, land and air pollution. According to Ecology, almost 4 billion trees or 35% of the total trees was cut down globally to make paper and millions of pounds of highly toxic chemicals are released into the air and water from papermaking plants around the world each year. If you want to help, you can make the most use of your digital tools by reading e-book, newsletter and magazine online or store your document in your device rather than print it out. Another fun and easy thing you can do online is shopping. While you don’t have to travel to the mall, you can save the cost of gasoline, parking and other miscellaneous expense happening along the way.

Save Water

You’ve probably heard about the water shortage in Cambodia and some of you may have experienced it yourself. The impact of climate change causes the temperature to rise, dry up fresh water sources and lead to a short supply of water. Now you know it did happen. Data from Water Environment Partnership in Asia shows that urban water usage is estimated at about 100 liters per person per day.  If you want to help, you may consider saving more water by cutting down your water consumption and use it more efficiently. Less water used means less energy used in the pumping of water, fewer chemicals used in the treatment of water and wastewater, which reduces carbon emissions that contributes to greenhouse gases and leads to climate change. Not only does it affect the environment, but it also costly for you. Reducing your water consumption save you money and the environment. Win, Win!
