Training of Trainers program on “Reporting on specific issues related to sustainable development goals (SDGs)” 

 

Are you passionate about journalism? Do you want to help improve environmental coverage in the Cambodian news? Are you committed to teaching to working journalists in Cambodia? The Mekong News Training of Trainers program is for you!

 

The Cambodian Training of Trainers (ToT) program will be held from June to December 2019 for a maximum of 6 participants, with a view to developing a pool of trainers with expertise on specific issues related to Sustainable Development Goals in the Mekong region. This in turn contributes to increase coverage on specific environmental issues in Cambodia. The program comprises of the following modules:

 

●​ ​A two-day trainers workshop on scientific reporting: June 22-23, 2019;

●​ ​A two-day trainers workshop on loss of forest cover: July 27-28, 2019;

●​ ​A two-day trainers workshop on urban problems: August 10-11, 2019

●​ ​A two-day trainers workshop on coastal issues: September 14-15, 2019

 

 

The training of trainers program will equip participants with:

●​ ​A comprehensive understanding of the sustainable development goals and the importance of scientific journalism coverage;

●​ ​A better understanding of the international and regional treaties, declarations and guidelines that can be utilized to shape national responses to SDGs; 

●​ ​Specific curricula to train journalists on specific topics linked to SDGs; 

●​ ​Sources and contacts of a gender-balanced pool of experts to allow them to design their own trainings on specific environmental issues; 

 

●​ ​Open to Cambodian nationals

●​ ​Applicant should demonstrate commitment to ethical reporting and high-standard journalism

●​ ​Applicant should have a strong interest in reporting about SDGs issues, and more specifically on the impact of climate changes on everyday life, food safety and water management.

●​ ​Applicant should be fluent in Khmer with strong English skills

●​ ​A one-page letter of motivation explaining how you would benefit from participating in the Mekong News Training of Trainers program and outlining how you intend to use the knowledge and skills acquired ;

●​ ​A sample of a story you wrote related to environmental issues in Cambodia; 

●​ ​A letter of support from the director of the organization you are currently working with.

●​ ​Your commitment to make yourself available to conduct a training for working journalists during a week-end between October and December 2019.

Thmey Thmey and CFI are partnering in Cambodia on a project called “Mekong Sustainable News” to implemented activities related to media in order to support better understanding and coverage of environment related issues, in the field of SDG’ achievement.

 

Thmey Thmey is a Cambodian online media (thmeythmey.com) publishing current national news. It is entirely managed by Cambodian journalists, and began publishing in 2013. It is owned by Cambodian Media Broadcasting Corporation (CMBC), a company set up by local journalists and businessmen. The journalists used to work for Cambodge Soir — a French-language newspaper published between 1995 and 2010 by Editions du Mekong, a Franco-Cambodian company — and Radio France Internationale (RFI), the French public radio service that broadcasts in 15 languages including Khmer. In 2018, the Cambodian Centre for Independent Media ranked Thmeythmey.com and RFI as being among the most independent media in Cambodia. 

 

CFI is a French media cooperation agency mainly funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development. It is responsible for coordinating and implementing public aid policy for promoting and enhancing the media in developing countries. CFI is currently involved in around thirty projects that fall within three major programmes: media and governance, media and enterprise, media and development.
