Thmeythmey plans to launch an English-language version (en.thmeythmey.com) of its online news service in April to provide in-depth coverage of Cambodia to the outside world.

En.thmeythmey.com will be a unique platform offering accurate and unbiased news and analysis through the eyes of Cambodian journalists. Like its Khmer-language parent, the daily news service will follow a strict code of ethics to ensure its audience receives fact-based content on social, economic, political and cultural affairs as well as sporting events. Breaking news, features, interviews, profiles and analyses will serve as food for thought for both local and foreign audiences seeking to understand Cambodia. The daily news service will also be committed to projecting the kingdom’s potential to other countries in Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

Entirely managed by Cambodian journalists, Thmeythmey  began publishing in 2013 and is owned by Cambodian Media Broadcasting Corporation (CMBC), a company set up by local journalists and businessmen. The journalists used to work for Cambodge Soir — a French-language newspaper published between 1995 and 2010 by Editions du Mekong, a Franco-Cambodian company — and Radio France Internationale (RFI), the French public radio service that broadcasts in 15 languages including Khmer. In 2018, the Cambodian Centre for Independent Media ranked Thmeythmey and RFI as being among the most independent media in Cambodia.

The journey of Thmeythmey and its future plan

Welcome to Thmeythmey – an independent, leading online news website in Cambodia!
Thmeythmey was unveilled in 2013 by a group of highly professional Cambodian journalists with more than 20 years of experience in the field. They had previously worked for French-language Cambodge Soir and Radio France Internationale until one day they decided to embark on a venture to establish what has become today a leading online media outlet in Cambodia. In the six years since its creation, the site has attracted more than 600,000 viewers daily.

Until recently the media landscape in Cambodia has been dominated by expatriates in terms of both ownership and day-to-day news gathering and publishing operation. As a new comer in the local media industry, Thmeythmey was created as a unique platform to provide readers with news about the country from purely Cambodian perspectives. Its editorial and reporting staff is made up of Cambodian journalists many of whom are young but energetic and no less professional than their colleagues who have been in the profession longer than them.

An independent and professional news organization, Thmeythmey provides readers with daily fact-based and unbiased news and analysis on social, economic, political, and cultural topics and sporting events in the Kingdom of Cambodia. In addition to text, Thmeythmey’s contents also includes video and audio versions of the stories to make the website more interactive and offer choices for the audience, helping them make sense of the complex world that we live in.
With a team of nearly fifty people, thmeythmey is a media outlet of reference in terms of respecting ethical rules for the production of information.

The founding team of our organization is part of the generation of Cambodian journalists who received training through the support of French cooperation, the Francophonie organization, and U.S.-based Independent Journalism Foundation (IJF) in the early 1990s. We adhere to a strict journalistic code of ethics in reporting and publishing stories. To help inform our audience about international events, we subscribe to international services of France-based AFP and China’s Xinhua news agencies – unlike some other local outlets that reprint international news artices without proper permission from their respective owners.

Operating as a purely private entity, Thmeythmey generates its revenues from selling advertisements, publishing advertorials and books.

In an attempt to diversify our revenue sources, recently we have developed an online application to help meet the needs of Cambodian farmers and small business operators in the rural areas, who have a hard time selling their products. The ultimate aim of this App – called ‘Thmeythmey 25 provinces’ – is to improve access of their products and services to market, which would, hopefully, help reduce outward migration of young people to find work in urban areas or overseas. The App is already in operation.

The latest experiment is in line with Thmeythmey's mission, which is ‘applying media technology to improve economic and democratic development of Cambodia.’
Creating a communications school to teach journalism and public relations is next in Thmeythmey’s plan in the long run.
